Whether for work, school or home, it is nowadays essential to have a laptop. Fortunately, prices have dropped dramatically in the last decade. Consumers also have much more choice than ten or fifteen years ago. If you plan to get a laptop soon, you’re in the right place. In this article, I will give you the main advantages and disadvantages of Chromebook, MacBook and Windows laptops.

1. Chromebooks

  • The Chromebook is the newcomer in the field of laptops. This does not prevent it from being extremely popular with consumers.

The operating system
The Chromebooks run under the operating system of Google, Chrome OS. This operating system is a kind of fusion between Windows 10 and macOS. If you have used any of these operating systems before, you will immediately be on familiar ground.

Chrome OS is compatible with a wide range of apps from the Google Play store. Recently, it is also compatible with Android applications.

If you need a word processor or other productivity software, you can use Google Docs or Google Sheets, for example. However, Chromebooks are also compatible with the Office suite.

In any case, Chromebooks work best when connected to the internet. They work even better if you use the Chrome browser. This is the default Chromebook browser that is also used in many smart phones and computers. If you’re using Chrome on your cell phone, you’ll be able to sign in to your mobile device, for example, and continue it at home or work on your Chromebook. Your productivity will be increased tenfold.

Only downside, Chromebooks are not compatible with some specialized software. If you have to use specific software for your work, first make sure it is compatible with your Chromebook to avoid unpleasant surprises.

The power
Chromebooks are not power beasts. We forget games that are too powerful (like the latest FPS) and professional computer graphics software. However, to write essays and take notes, they are perfect. They also do very well when you want to watch videos on YouTube or series on Netflix.

They are also not compatible with some devices, simply because of the lack of compatible drivers.

The cost
This is one of the biggest benefits of Chromebooks. These notebooks offer excellent value for money. For the consumer who has a small budget, and does not need too much power, a Chromebook will do just fine. It will also not have to get separately productivity software, because they are offered for free via Google.

However, we appreciate choosing Chromebook for kids, because the configuration and shape of the chromebook is quite appropriate

2. MacBooks

The MacBook is a very popular computer both at school and at work, and it’s easy to understand.

The operating system
MacBooks use the macOS operating system. In my humble opinion, this is the most beautiful and complete operating system currently available on the market. macOS Catalina, the latest version, includes a host of productivity and entertainment applications like the new Music, Podcasts and Apple TV apps. You can also edit your images in Photos and easily check your emails in Mail, one of my favorite mail management applications.

Another advantage is that MacBooks take full advantage of other Apple devices. Do you have an iPad? You can easily use it as a second screen! Do you have an Apple Watch? Use it to unlock your computer, or to authorize the installation of a new application!

Despite the presence of Apple Arcade, MacBook unfortunately do not address the most rigorous players. Why? Simply because of the compatibility of video games with Apple’s operating system. Too many games are still only designed for Windows.

The power
MacBooks are recognized as one of the most powerful computers in the industry. This means that you will be able to multitask more easily (to roll several applications at the same time). Gourmet apps will not scare you, either.

Apple laptops generally offer good storage space for recording photos and videos.

The cost
The cost is surely one of the biggest disadvantage of the MacBook. They are expensive! If you have a small budget and do not need multimedia software, you can go to a Chromebook or Windows laptop.

3. Windows laptops

Laptops running Windows are still popular today. What is good with this kind of computer is that we find for all tastes and for all styles. You can get a small laptop for a few hundred dollars or invest several thousand dollars for an ultra-powerful laptop.

The operating system
Windows 10 is the default operating system in Windows laptops. This operating system has the advantage of being compatible with a wide variety of applications and software.

Most software is first designed for Windows 10 before being developed for other versions. If you need to use some software for your work or school, it is most likely that your Windows laptop is compatible with them.

The power
Here you are spoiled for choice. If you need power, you will find models that will meet your needs. On the other hand, if you intend to use your mobile phone only for word processing, you will find your account.

However, shopping for a Windows computer can be complicated, especially if you have specific needs. For example, if you need to use an application that requires 8 GB of RAM, you need to make sure that your laptop will actually have 8 GB of RAM; it does not work quite like Chromebooks and MacBooks.

The cost
The cost of Windows computers varies greatly depending on the models. It is therefore easier to respect your budget.

4. Which one to choose?

If you are looking for an entry level model and you are using low power applications (word processing, social networking, email, etc.), you should choose a Chromebook, we also usually recommend this as The product is suitable for both the kids. You can also refer to best chromebook for kids .Also, If you are looking for a mid-range model and you intend to use some specific software, look for a Windows model. Finally, if you have a job in the arts or you study multimedia, look to the MacBook.
Of course, this ranking is not cast in stone. Even if you’re not a graphic designer, there’s nothing stopping you from going, for example, to a MacBook because you like the design of its operating system. The important thing is to choose a model that will best meet your needs and your budget.
